What Is Closed Loop Fashion?

We’re trying to be part of the change to sustainable, closed loop fashion.

We’re focusing on the good by creating systems and processes with Ares+Co.

For far too long, fast fashion has been dominating the industry. Cheap, accessible but highly wasteful with many downsides that consumers don’t see.

The truth is...

  • One billion fashion garments are made every year and over 80% of them end up in our landfills
  • Majority of pieces are made up of cotton which is known to be a crop depleting resource due to the large amount of water used in the harvesting process
  • Fast fashion workers are known to have unfair wages, poor working conditions and directly violate their human rights

Here at Ares+ Co, we’re reducing our environmental footprint with slow, sustainable, close-loop fashion that you don’t have to feel guilt about.

What is closed loop fashion?

Closed loop fashion creates “closed-loop” systems around manufacturing and producing clothing ethically and sustainability to circulate in society for as long as possible, so these pieces are meant to last! Each step needs to be completed before moving onto the next, creating a “closed” cycle or “loop” that the entire process goes through when creating a garment. Opposed to linear (fast fashion) business models, which quickly deplete goods and the beginning of the process is started over again rather than creating the “loop” cycle of reusing and upcycling. Every detail that goes into the production process is carefully done and NOT meant to scale into a cheap, easy to produce manufacturing process. These materials are used over and over again to then create new products for purchase. By using these processes, this helps regenerate resources because we believe in making things sustainable for future generations. Essentially, the supply chain used by close-loop fashion companies are meant to use the same materials over and over again in order to recycle and reuse material, rather than producing new waste.

Why now?

At the rate big box stores and large corporations are working, resources are depleting at a rate faster than they can be regenerated. Exploiting these resources means an unsustainable economy for future generations. For generations to come, we want a healthy, happy planet for the ones we love to grow up on. In short, we want to curb textile waste and provide solutions for consumers that are ethical and sustainable without sacrificing comfort and quality. Through careful research and sustainable methods, the processes used to create closed loop fashion pieces are far less harmful for the environment. Not only that, but closed loop fashion companies go far beyond during their sourcing process. More often than not, recycled goods and raw materials are used throughout the process.

This can include:

  • Using recycled rain water during manufacturing
  • Sourcing organic and natural products such as organic cotton and hemp
  • Donating unused goods
  • Reusing and upcycling textiles in new garments

The first Fall line up at Ares+Co strives to produce organically and ethically by following all of these best practices. With closed-loop fashion, we truly follow the 3 R’s. Starting with reducing our waste, reusing our pieces and recycling and donating old materials.
